Is there anything more beautiful ?

Than an oxblood Weejun ? Well of course there is but we're talking shoes here .

This picture was taken by my 13 year old daughter when i was taking photographs of Jellyfish haha .

You have a pair of shoes for years and you lovingly polish them occasionally until they start to show the life they have undoubtedly had .... THAT'S when you own a pair of shoes as opposed to todays throwaway world where you merely lease clothing until it goes out of fashion .

LONG LIVE THE LOAFER !!!

Brogues ....The King Of Shoes

Brogues ? Never given them much thought really until I checked out my shoe wardrobe and realised i had 9 pairs and it got me thinking ...

Now I'm making the assertion that brogues are the "King of Shoes" because they aren't just a shoe , they are a statement , a MAN'S shoe . You wear a pair of brogues and the statement you're making is that of manhood ....Someone who knows the difference between taking a woman for a meal and taking a girl to McDonalds ... Someone who can order drinks properly without hearing "do you want fries with that ?" .

That's right people , the brogue is a statement of maturity , a statement that you know the difference between your arse and your elbow .

Now not only are they all that but going back to the shoe bit , you can both dress up and outfit and dress down the brogue .... match with a pair of Levi's and hooped socks and you create a "LOOK" or alternatively wear with a suit for a level of smartness few other shoes can achieve .

As I say ....I never gave it much thought

PLEASANTVILLE - GENIUS !!

This film is GENIUS !!! phew I'm glad I got that out of the way , the big question is why?

Well here goes , the general synopsis of the movie is ...... Brother and sister get "zapped" into a TV show called "PLEASANTVILLE" which is a fictional 1950's show where everything is well , pleasant ! The kids are all great , the parents are all happy , the school basketball team never loses and it never rains ...It's that good ! Until the brother and sister arrive .

Now of course PLEASANTVILLE (the show) is in Black & White and i have to tell you it is a gloriously full and rich B&W with a tone and contrast that is spot on ...so far so good !

Now is where the real genius starts occurring . As the main protaganists start interacting with the residents of pleasantville they bring with them a knowledge of the real world and little bits of it slip out resulting in a "selective colouring" of certain items and certain people as the experience "new" feelings and i have to say the aesthetic is ASTONISHING !!!

The most memorable scenes are when "Bud" and his date are driving to Lover's Lane (every good town has one) completely in B&W until his date switches on the radio ... as the cherry blossom start falling in glorious colour out of the radio comes the immortal words from Miss Etta James "At Laaaaaast" we have a combination of PERFECT selective colouring , beautiful 50's car and the genius of Etta James that creates what can only be described as a perfect moment .

The other memorable scene comes near the end in a court room scene VERY reminiscent of "To Kill A Mockingbird" with the "Coloured People" segregated by being made to sit upstairs ...this film really does touch a lot of bases but some may find the story a little twee and fair enough but it is required viewing purely for the look of it which to re-iterate my original point is GENIUS

Now I'm sure some of you will recognise the image on this page but if you don't this is what denim should look like .....Let's not arse about with the "new" styles such as G-Star or other such abominations , for a classic denim it only has one answer LEVI'S 501 ...simple .

Now it comes down to what you want from a Jean , well for me it's an all round item of clothing that i can dress up (like the gentleman here with a classic shoe/boot) or dress down (with an Engineer Boot) .

Now we get on to the "complications" of style , this is soooooo easy ...Buy them dark and LIVE IN THEM to achieve a distressed look because frankly if you buy them distressed the be off with you , you don't belong here , if you buy distressed jeans you are giving the impression of having lived a life when in fact you are a mollycoddled (?) phoney like the idiots who believe that a t-shirt qouting the legend "vintage 62" actually is vintage NO IT'S BLOODY NOT YOU PLANK .

I'd go as far to say that when the day comes that the jeans have "died" and given up the ghost completely an approxomation of a viking longboat should be built with the jeans placed in them and set adrift in a glorious funeral pyre of memories and experiences . For example , I have a pair for 501XX that i have had for near on 17 years and in those 17 years they have been with me for the birth of 2 children , a divorce , a stag night (when they got covered in beer , kebab sauce and piss) and various "trysts" .....thats how important a favourite pair of jeans is

This might not last long but lets see ...

All things that will appear on this blog will all follow the same philosophy ...CLASSIC ... be it vinyl(yes i said vinyl , ORIGINAL VINYL) , clothing , art , photography or transport .

So let's start with a piece of "design" ... I use design loosely because I done it.

As you can see it's a club flyer for BASICS and yes the logo is based on the Googie "school"(an example is alongside the flyer) of design popularised in the 1950's .

So that says where i'm coming from in a good proportion of my life and future posts will be things i like and things i love (and possibly things i hate )
